• Week 108 May 14 •
"But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from the burdens common to man; they are not plagued by human ills." (Psalm 73:2-5)
There are days when living without God looks better. People around you who aren't saved appear to be enjoying whatever they want whenever they want. They have plenty of fame, fortune and fun. They prosper when your family has to pinch pennies. They are care-free while you strive to live worthy. It may seem easier to not be a Christian at this point in your life, then again, no one ever said it was going to be easy.
"Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds." (Psalm 73:27-28)
The writer of Psalm 73 opens with his struggle to envy those who don't know God. He ends with the realization that all who are apart from God will perish and be destroyed for their wickedness. But for those who trust in the Lord and delight in his truth there is true goodness and freedom.
I'm sure you have heard the old saying: "The grass is always greener on the other side." We as humans struggle with contentment in almost every area. Take the knowledge of the matter and use it as your strength. Apart from God there is only death. Apart from God there is no hope in this life or the next. We should never envy those who live without God, for they are the ones in need. Don't neglect and take for granted the price that Christ paid for you with his blood so that you might know true freedom. May God alone be your source of life and purpose.
"My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." (Psalm 73:26)
