"It gave me great joy to have some brothers come and tell about your faithfulness to the truth and how you continue to walk in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth." (3 John 3-4)
I think about all the times I've resolved to start reading my bible everyday. I remember the times when I promised to pray every day too. It always starts good but sadly falls prey to my weak will. It's harder to keep something good going then it is to start it. Putting something in motion takes only a single effort, maintaining it takes continual effort. What have you started lately that you are struggling to continue? Where are you struggling to keep up?
Endurance is the will that wins the race, not a flashy start. Hebrews points out the need for endurance. In chapter 12 the author makes it simple, it's going to take endurance to keep up. This life is much like a race that we must run. We must run to the finish. We must commit to the long haul. It's about the truth and glory of God.
I'm good at coming up with ideas. I come up with some great ones too, ones that could change the world. But ideas in themselves don't change the world. Good intentions never fed the hungry. I must grab ahold of the idea, follow it, work it, persevere in it, and see it through to the finish. That will bring change. What do you want to see finished? What do believe is worth sticking with and running for?
Your relationship with God is worth running for. Living out of your belief in God, so that the world may know him and the truth of his word, is worth running for. It's only through God's truth and presence that this world will ever be changed. Once God has given you truth, there should be no turning back, or side-stepping. Keep your focus straight ahead on the truth. Keep running. The only thing worthwhile in this life is to continually pursue the presence of God and glorify him by grace through faith. It's about the kind of faith that keeps going even when it takes endurance, the kind of faith that keeps running because it sees the goal is worth it all!
God is worth it all.
