I delight in the chance to splash in puddles! I haven't done it recently, but as a young kid I never missed a rainstorm!
What do you delight in? Don't think about this question too hastily. I'm not talking about things that you kinda like, or the things you think are fun. I'm talking about the raw child-like enjoyment and satisfaction from something that makes you want to shout or dance. All too often as we pass child-hood we put the majority of life in the normal, mundane, or tolerable category. We loose our sense of wonder and glee in response to the world around us.
God made us to delight, and He made much for us to delight in. Stop and think about eating chocolate. Can you remember when you first tasted it? That explosion of sweet gooey flavor, calling forth saliva that wasn't there a moment ago, to mix and accentuate a wonderful sensation of flavor! What a rush! God could have made chocolate taste like grass you know.
Now, think about how you can see in color. My son is just passed 4 months now. They say that for the first 3 months babies can only see in black and white. I don't how they figures these things out. But, I have purposefully watched my son this past month as he looks around. I wish I knew what was going through his mind as the world comes alive with thousands of new shades of colors! At times I see his eyes widen and I suspect he must have seen a new color. Think about how incredible it is to see in color. God could have made the world in black and white you know.
I believe God is much more than an austere Holy judge. He is the creator of joy and beauty. He chooses to extend his infinite glory and goodness into all his creation. From the majesty of the galaxies to the splendor of a butterfly God has made much for us to delight in. But he didn't just make us to delight in perishable things, He made us ultimately to eternally delight in Him.
You and I were made to delight in God. He is the ultimate satisfaction. Everything I delight in here on earth combined will never reach the value of enjoying God. We were made to find pleasure, satisfaction, and joy in a relationship of grace with Him. " I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels." (Is. 61:10-11)
May you be aware of even the simple things that God has orchestrated for your delight. He is an infinite God that finds joy in providing even the smallest detail for us to delight in. Don't loose the wonder and awe of the simple. When Paul says in I Corinthians to do everything to the glory of God even in eating and drinking I believe he is reminding us to refresh our praise of God's goodness as we delight in all that he has made.
May you delight in God when you eat your next meal, when you view the next sunset, when you hear laughter, when you hug a friend, when you hear an orchestra, when you play with a pet, when you smell orange blossoms, when you feel a cool breeze on a warm day, when you lay your head on your pillow, and when you wake up the next day to enjoy it all over again. Find delight around you and then let that direct your attention to the one who makes it all possible. Delight in the Lord.
